The globe is the symbol of Portugal and may have advertised the availability of Portuguese wine at a pub displaying the sign. However, in the same way that the Portuguese, a pioneering seafaring nation, it may be that pubs in the UK adopted the symbol at a time when British world power was increasing as a sort of boast.
Additionally, when a publican had a second trade he may have advertised this by hanging a globe outside of his establishment.
