"Wilmington's red brick Pettee Library building on South Main Street was built in the Classical Revival style. Its front entrance, a classic portal with Ionic columns and a heavy oak-paneled door topped by a fanned window, is guarded by a sculpted Union soldier on the front lawn."

"Standing figure of a soldier, facing west, wearing a uniform consisting of a long coat, a cape buttoned at the top and a cap. The moustached figure holds a rifle with both hands by the barrel. The butt of the gun rests in front of his proper left foot. His proper right foot is forward and bent at the knee. He stands in front of a tree stump."
