The 330 acre, Bellefontaine Cemetery was begun in 1849 in response to the
existing city cemeteries filling up due to cholera epidemics. It has become the
final resting place for many of the city's notables.
Among the Civil War notables buried in the cemetery are several generals for
both the Union and Confederate Armies. Other Civil War era notables include
Edward Bates, Lincoln's attorney general; Confederate senator and later U.S.
senator George Graham Vest; unionist provisional governor Hamilton Gamble; and
ironclad boat builder James B. Eads.
One
of the Confederate Generals buried at Bellefontaine is Major General Sterling
Price. (Grave located at
N38 41.673 W090 13.800 ) He was a former U.S. Congressman and Governor of
Missouri (1853-1857). During the Civil War he headed the Confederate Missouri
State Guard and later after its merger in the the Confederate Army of the West
he served as a Major General. His unit saw considerable action in battles in

One
of the Union Generals buried at Bellefontaine is Major General Don Carlos Buell.
(Grave located at
N38 41.698 W090 13.728) He was the commander of the Army of the Ohio which
he lead into Tennessee. He led the takeover of Nashville. He unit saw further
action in the Battles of Shiloh, Corinth & Perryville. He was relieved of his
command for his failure to pursue the retreating enemy after the Battle of
