The building was built in 1897 as an Urban District Town Hall. This Distric Council was absorbed into the Barnsley Metropiltan Borough Council and is now controlled by them. Most of the council adminstration is now carried out in Barnsley, but there is still an office open in the building for the public to access council services.
Wombwell is a small thriving township and has had improvements to the shopping area. At one time there were local coal mines providing work, but these have now closed.
