About ten years ago Bob Klemme of Enid, Oklahoma began marking the Chisholm trail along section lines in Oklahoma. He has placed over 400 concrete posts throughout Oklahoma as well as one at the beginning of the trail in Kingston, Texas and one at the trails end in Abilene, Kansas.
The trail was named after Jesse Chisholm who had set up trading posts along this trail. The trail was used from 1867-1889 by cowboys herding longhorn cattle from Texas to Kansas. They could only get about $3.50 a head in Texas but were able to get about $13.00 or more by herding them north. It is estimated between 5-10 million head of cattle traveled over this trail.
