In the year 1826 AD, Anuwongse, a prince of Laos, which at that time was subordinate to Siam, led an army to the Siam city of Korat in order to renounce his allegiance, directly. The Siamese governor of Korat was absent, thus the city was speedily taken and a group of Siamese prisoners and hostages were conveyed back to Vientiene (the capital of Laos).

One of the prisoners was Khun (polite title = Mrs) Thao Suranari, the wife of the deputy governor. She sparked a rebellion amongst the prisoners, resulting in their release, which in turn led to the failure of the Laos invasion. She was honoured by the King of Siam with the title of 'Lady', in recognition of her role in the invasion. She also has a statue (WM9GJX) in the centre of Korat city.

Assisting her in her rebellion were a group of fellow female prisoners, ~250m north of the statue of Khun Thao Suranari is group statue of a host of women, screaming, waving sticks, and chasing (off stage) a group of men—the Laos army soldiers. This statue depicts one event in the rebellion, when the females surprised a group of soldiers and made them flee.
