The cemetery was established in 1790 on gently sloping ground on the southern outskirts of Rose Hill settlement.
The earliest headstone is that of Henry Edward Dodd who died in 1791. His was the first public funeral in the colony.

The coordinates are the grave of another notable. Augustus Theodore Henry Alt, Baron of Hefse Cafsel, Australia's first Surveyor General and our first German Immigrant.

The cemetery contains the graves of convicts, free settlers and statesmen.

The transcripts have around 943 names, there will be more interred as some are without headstone.
