Hereford now extends from the San Pedro River to the base of the Huachuca Mountains and North along the San Pedro Riparian Conservations site.

A High School classmate of mine had this to say about the old train station. "Jim-- I grew up in Hereford, My Dad was the Telegraph Operator at the Southern Pacific Depot from about 1955 to 1959. I would have to dig for dates to be sure, I have his things. We lived across the tracks from the Depot, next to section the gang housing. I do have pictures someplace. We went to School at Palominos 1st grade to 5th. grade in a 2 room School with sliding door between classrooms. 1st thru 3rd on one side and 4th thru 6th on the other. 7th and 8th grades were across the hall. Mr.& Mrs. Farmer were the teachers. I have pictures of this also somewhere. There was a store across the way. There was a family on Palominos road that had a Chicken and Turkey Farm. Their name was Stoner and friends at the time, they had over a dozen kids which I was friends with and stayed and helped kill and clean birds at holiday time. Mr. Stoner worked at the pit in Bisbee. Names of some of the kids are Mary, Dale, Arthur, David, and Tommy. We all slept in thee basement of the house. There were incubators upstairs. The building had outside stairs to sleeping areas with blankets to separate beds. A separate building for the kitchen and wash room. We had a 3 sided pot area, you could sit and do your duty and see over sides. At night we had a slop jar at bottom of stairs to sleeping area. When Mrs. Stoner had her babies she always had a bed in Kitchen building for herself and baby until the baby was big enough to go to sleeping area.
The agent for Depot was Mr. Thomas. Mr. MacPeck and Mr. Pruitt were on the work crew. Mr. MacPeck had horses and cows behind where we lived, at the corrals. They all had houses west of the Depot. Thomas's and Pruitt's had kids and we all played together. The water tower was east of the Depot on the same side of the road. We had an Ice House at the end of the warehouse platform across from Mr. MacPeck's. We used to go down with wagon and get Ice Blocks for the fridge. We had an outhouse for a toilet for many years and used a coal burner for heating and cooking. The store and Mail building was down around on the curve. The Lady that ran it was named Bernie, she always dressed like a man. She lived there but later moved to Ramsey Canyon. She lived in a really nice rock house and we used to go see her after we moved to Bisbee Junction. Mr. Thomas was the Agent there too and my Dad was the Telegrapher at the same time. Mr. Thomas built a house there and retired there. I miss the area but realize it was a long time ago. We lived along the tracks all my life because of the railroad and my Mom worked for Mountain Bell in Warren. When we went to Tombstone High School we lived at Fairbanks. So you see I was familiar with all around there. Douglas, Bisbee, Bisbee Junction, San Jose Estates, Hereford, Tombstone and Naco. We also lived along New Mexico to El Paso. My Dad closed the stations at Paul Spur, Douglas, Oro Grande, Bisbee Junction, Benson and St. David Can't remember them all."
