The monument is located at the top of Mule Pass in the Mule Mountains Cochise County, Arizona. This is the Northern entrance to the City of Bisbee. With the completion of I-10 Bisbee, Az. was no longer on the main East West Transcontinental Highway. The section of U.S. 80 from Benson, Az. to the State line between Az. and NM. became a state highway. Highway 80 was a part of the Old Spanish Trail.
Construction of the section of highway was completed in 1913. The elevation on the marker is 6030 ft.
In 1958 the pass was once again bypassed with the completion of the Mule Pass Tunnel.
