REMEMBERING
17 OPERATIONAL
TRAINING UNIT
SILVERSTONE AIRFIELD
1943- 1946
17 OTU, Operational Training Unit, was responsible for training bomber crews and making raids into occupied Europe.
By June 1943 54 Wellington Bombers were stationed at Silverstone. Training was mainly for night bomber raids.
Within the first twelve months 36 crashes are recorded with the loss of 124 killed.
In subsequent years many more were lost during training and operations over Europe and today we honour former airmen of 17 OTU.
The RAF base was closed in 1946 and sold by the MOD in 1947.
Without the wartime airfield we should never have had the racetrack.
