These mermen are on the central part of a prominent fountain in Jersey City's Lincoln Park. The fountain was built in 1911 by sculptor Pierre J. Cheronin.
Mermen are part of the mythology of several cultures including the Greeks, Babylonians, and Finns. Mermen were believed to have the ability to cure illnesses and lift spells...but, on the downside, they were also believed to cause unintended harm.
