Portuguese exploration
Vasco da Gama (1469?-1524)
by Antonio Manuel da Fonseca, 1832
In 1497 Vasco da Gama was sent by Portugal to push open the route to the East established by Diaz and secure footholds for trading. Driven home from Calicu in India by Arab merchants, he returned in 1502, aggressive and merciless, to secure a protected trade route that was to make Portugal wealthy. This painting is a 19th-century oil copy of an original in Portugal.
