In de nacht van 26/27 april 1944 vertrok Lancaster ND 873 van het 12e squadron van RAF-basis Wickenby voor een bombardementsvlucht op Essen in het Ruhrgebied. Aan deze aanval namen bijna 500 vliegtuigen deel, waaronder 342 Lancasters.
Op de terugweg werd het toestel neergeschoten door een Duitse Messerschmitt en stortte brandend neer in de Astense Aa in ‘De Berken’. Hierbij kwamen alle zeven bemanningsleden om het leven. Ze liggen nu begraven op de Britse begraafplaats Jonkerbos in Nijmegen.
Het monument is in 2006 geplaatst en bevindt zich aan het wandelpad langs de Astense Aa in het natuurgebied ‘De Berken’, ten noordoosten van Asten, noordelijk van de autosnelweg A67.
Ter nagedachtenis aan de zeven bemanningsleden:
- Sergeant Alexander SHIELS, rugkoepelschutter, 21 jaar; uit Auchinloch (Lanarkshire)
- Officier Lawrence SMITH, bommenrichter/neuskoepelschutter, 21 jaar; uit Westmeath (Ontario,Canada)
- Sergeant Alexander McJANNETT, radiotelegrafist, gehuwd, 21 jaar; uit Wigston Magna (Leicestershire)
- Officier Alfred McKAY, navigator, 21jaar; uit Knockando (Morayshire)
- Sergeant Roy LAYBOURNE, boordwerktuigkundige, 21jaar; uit Worsley (Lancashire)
- Sergeant Harold DYERSON, staartschutter, 32 jaar; uit Plaistow (Essex) .
- Officier George NICHOLLS, piloot, gehuwd, 32 jaar; uit Heamoor, Penzance (Cornwall)
In the night of 26/27 April, 1944, the Lancaster with number ND873 of 12th Squadron of RAF airbase Wickenby took of for a bombardment mission to Essen in the German Ruhrgebiet. Almost 500 aircraft participated in this attack, amongst which 342 Lancasters.
On its trip home the aircraft was shot down by a German Messerschmitt and crashed burning into the small stream, the Astense Aa in “The Berken”. All seven crew perished. They are buried on the British war cemetery “Jonkerbos” in Nijmegen.
The monument has been placed in 2006 and can be found besides the walking track along the stream the ’Astense Aa’ in the nature reserve “The Berken” north-east of the village Asten and north of the highway A67
