Welcome to the remains of Henry's Valley steam tannery. A visit here requires a 2 mile hike one way. The location has a small sign that reads: Henry's Valley Steam Tannery 1840-1880. Not much of the buildings remain, just a few foundations, and walls. It is in a valley between the mountains that usually only hunters visit, so be careful during hunting season. The tanning industry in America is, in fact, one of the original industries, and was from the early days one of the vocations of the pioneers. Perry county at one time was among the leading counties of the state in the tanning business. A visit can be reached by hiking or driving. The roads leading into the valley are not paved and not maintained. A visit by hiking is the more scenic way in, by using part of the Tuscarora Trail.
