This memorial tells the story writer Mark Twain. Hannibal Missouri was the boyhood home of Samuel Clemens before he took the pen name of Mark Twain. He learned the trade of Steam Boat Pilot. When the Civil War broke out his Steam boat pilot career ended and in 1863 he moved west and adopted the pen name Mark Twain.

The plaque reads:

"Mark Twain -staemB0at Pilot
In 1857 young Samuel Adams began to learn the trade of Steam Boat Pilot. In 1859 he became a licensed pilot on the lower Mississippi river. When his piloting career end with the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, Clemens went west to the Nevada Territory where he first used the pen name Mark Twain while writing for the Territorial Enterprise in Virginia City. Clemens took the name Mark Twain from the River sounding that indicated 12 feet of water, which was safe for navigation."
