GGG Stadtbibliokthek Basel is a public library in Basel. Besides the main location there are 6 branch offices all over town. It is operated by the GGG ("Gesellschaft für das Gute und Gemeinnützige", a private, non-profit organization founded in 1777). The library startet in 1807 as a reading room for people from the lower classes. This was turned in to a real library in 1823. In 1901 the GGG took over another local library association with several branches and merged them to the current structure. The main location at Schmiedehof opened in 1907.
Currently the library has a stock of over 250,000 titles, about 60% of that are books, the rest CDs, DVDs and computer games.
The member card is free until the age of 19, 20 CHF from 19-26 and 40 CHF for adults. These are prices for one year for Basel residents, if you live somewhere else it is a little bit more. There's also a 200 CHF/year gold member card without lending quantity limits.
