This was the original goose, placed to honour the opening of the Trans-Canada Highway in 1960. The goose was made of a paper mache construction and did not survive for long in the elements of the harsh Algoma seasons. It was replaced with the current steel version in 1963. This original goose ended up in the hands of local entrepeneur Al Turcott, at his Fort Friendship amusement park, where he lovingly restored the old goose. Legend has it that in the three years this goose was on displayed, it suffered 80 gunshot wounds.
After being restored, the goose has since been put on display at Young's General Store, a local roadside attraction in its own right.
