Brompton, built in 1838, is brick home with a white-columned porch overlooking Fredericksburg. The vantage point also looks across Marye Heights, where the Union soldiers charged the Confederates entrenched along Sunken Road. The house and surrounding area still has the battle scars of artillery fire and trenches. The house later served as a Union hospital. Now it is the home for the president of the University of Mary Washington.
