"Legacy of 1869" was sponsored by the Sac and Fox Nation. It is a standing horse displayed in front of the Sac & Fox Housing Authority building at 201 N. Harrison. It is painted gray with the names of all of the tribal members on the Sac and Fox roll who first settled in Oklahoma Indian Territory in 1869. The artist is Sac and Fox member, Tony Tiger.

In 2007, the City of Shawnee sponsored the Horse in the City program as part of its Public Arts Project. Life-sized fiberglass horses were sponsored by companies, organizations and individuals in the Shawnee area. Choosing one of four poses (Standing Thoroughbred, Standing Arabian, Grazing and Rearing), each sponsor worked with an artist, designing how their horse would be painted. Some depict paintings specific to the sponsor's business or interests, and others depict Oklahoma history and other generic designs.

The horses are displayed throughout the City of Shawnee and it is such a joy to suddenly spot one alongside the road. Enjoy finding as many of these as you can.
