This website (
visit link) describes the events that occurred here near the end of the Revoltuionary War. Curiously, the New Jersey State Histoical Marker at the site doesn't actually mention that this massacre happened as part of the War. A US vessel noticed that a British ship was docked near here. As some of the crew unloaded the ship's cargo, other crew members went ashore..and were eventually murdered by the British troops.
The text of the marker reads:
"MASSACRE AT LONG BEACH
MASSACRE AT LONG BEACH
October 25, 1782 a British
vessel ran aground near Bar-
negat City and was captur-
ed by patriot militiamen un-
der Capt. Andrew Steelman.
That night, while sleeping on
the beach, Steelman and his
men were massacred by Tory
raiders led by John Bacon."
