Most Roman theatres that have been found are amphitheatres, at St Albans the theatre is rather based on a stage.
The theatre was initially built in 140AD, later expanded in 180 AD, and redeveloped about 300 AD to accommodate an audience of 2000. The arena would have been used for religious processions, bull fights, sword fights, public executions, drama, mime and dance
The ruins were unearthed in 1847. Later excavations have uncovered a row of shops and a Roman villa.
The theatre is open daily from 10am to 5 pm (4pm in winter). Admission is £2.50.
