The altar was consecrated by the Archbishop of Canterbury, The Most Reverend Dr Rowan Williams, on 4th June 2005 for the 1300th anniversary of St Aldhelm's consecration as Bishop of Sherborne.

Local craftsmen built the altar from local stone from the nearby St Aldhelm's Quarry and it was paid for by donations.

The Chapel dates back to the 12th century.
