Sloan is small, friendly community conveniently located 20 miles south of Sioux City, Ia, and 70 miles north of Omaha, and just a mile off of Interstate 29. We are a short drive from a wide variety of restaurants and shopping centers, as well as the Sioux Gateway Airport and Eppley Field in Omaha. We are located close to the Missouri River and the scenic Loess Hills. The City of Sloan is small town living at it’s best!
The town covers .5 sq. miles. As of 2007, the median age of Sloan residents is 38.4 years, with a population of 1,019 as of July, 2008.
The town continues to grow, with the addition of a car wash, new housing development, Kum & Go and Subway, all built in the last few years.
The town has a spacious park in the center of town with tennis and basketball courts, and children's play areas, as well as a covered picnic area. The Ray Nordstrom Sports Complex also has softball and soccer fields where the town youth teams play their games.
The town features 4 eating establishments, 3 convenience stores, post office, public library, a medical clinic, dentist office, veterinarian, and many more local businesses. We are in the Westwood Community School district, with a modern K-12 building built within the last 20 years.
The Township of Sloan was founded on June 8, 1875. The town was named after Samuel Sloan, who worked with John I. Blair and the Sioux City and Pacific Railroad. When a station was added in the area, it was named after Samuel Sloan. The section of land on which Sloan is located was donated to Mr. Blair by Rufus Beall who owned hundreds of acres of land surrounding the town site.
The choice to incorporate the town of sloan where it is located was unusual as it lacked several features common to all other townships of Woodbury County. It had no lake, spring or stream, nor any trees. All trees were planted in later years.
The first church was erected in 1881. The town was officially incorporated in 1883.
