The image on the coat of arms is the town crest, crescent, star and inverted fleur-de-lys. Representing the Stoke family the star and crescent shows their involvement in the crusades. The fleur-de-lys has been inverted and this is thought to be an insult to Wareham as when King John came to Wareham there was no welcoming ceremony; he was on his way to Corfe Castle and was angered to the extent that the town crest was affected.
The coat of arms also appears in Wareham Town Museum nearby. The images of the welcome sign are shown here in the gallery and the museum provides the source of the information on the crest.
