Sir Henry Morton Stanley was born John Rowlands. He was a Welsh journalist and explorer most famous for his exploration of Africa. He is noted for his search of Dr. David Livingstone and for his words "Dr. Livingston, I presume?" when he found him in Africa.

His later legacy of exploitation and destruction is considered an inspiration of Joseph Conrad's novella Heart of Darkness which portrayed the unjust treatment of the natives of the region.
