seated STATUE OF JEFFERSON in its center. Unveiled in 1915, it is a
copy of the figure made by Karl Bitter to commemorate the Louisiana
Purchase.

Inscription:
THOMAS JEFFERSON
I AM CLOSING THE LAST SCENE OF MY LIFE BY FASHIONING AND FOSTERING AN ESTABLISHMENT FOR THE INSTRUCTION OF THOSE WHO COME AFTER US. I HOPE THAT ITS INFLUENCE ON THEIR VIRTUE, FREEDOM, FAME AND HAPPINESS WILL BE SALUTORY AND PERMANENT.
Located on the West Lawn, south of Pavilion IX in the main part of the University of Virginia campus. Surrounded by low trees and shrubs. Several students were sketching the statue as part of an art class.
