The Icknield way pre-dates the Romans and is thought to be a neolithic trading route. Evidence of its route peter out towards Britain's east coast, but traces are thought to exist as far west as Salisbury or even Exeter.

There are many modern roads called Icknield Way particularly in this area. Letchworth and Luton in particular have roads that follow the route. It remains traceable for about 190 miles (305km).

In the picture labelled 'to the west' the village in the distance is Ickleford, where the path crosses the River Hiz. The picture 'to the east' is in the direction of Letchworth.
