Armored Personnel Carrier (M113A2)

The amphibious M113 Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) was produced from 1964-92. More than 85,000 were built, consisting of 35 variants in use by more than 40 countries. The U.S. Army's fleet of 32,000 is most often used by mechanized infantry units as a "battlefield taxi", carrying into battle with protection against small arms fire. It can also be used on the battlefield for transporting engineer units, medical evacuation, fire support, and command and control functions. It can carry a crew or two, plus an 11 member infantry squad, and it is typically armed with a .50 caliber M2 machine gun.

M113s were used extensively during the Vietnam War (1964-75) and the Persian Gulf War (1990-91). Early models were particularly vulnerable to larger caliber armor-piercing weapons, but later models gave more protection. The M113A2 model displayed here also includes cooling and suspension improvements. The M113 has an all-welded aluminum hull with a Kevlar liner.
