The fully amphibious DUKW is essentially a standard 2 1/2 ton 6x6 truck fitted into a watertight boat-like hull. For land operations it utilized the usual six wheel drive; on the water it was driven by a propeller and steered by combination of the front wheels and a rear rudder. Two mechanical pumps and one hand pump were provided to clear water from the hull should it be necessary.

Popularily known as a "duck", it was deveoped during World War Two for ferrying or landing troops. The Minnesota National Guard kept several of these vehicles on hand for rescuing people and farm animals stranded by floods.
