In downtown Seattle, near the Chase (WAMU) Tower, on Union Street is a Caffe Ladro establishment that I believe serves better espresso drinks than its bigger and better known Seattle-based competition, Starbucks.
They have a similar menu selection compared to Starbucks. They have lattes, espressos, and even coffee. They have been practicing 'Fair Trade, Shade Grown and Organic Coffee' since 2002. In 2007, they received the "Best Coffeehouse" award from Seattle Weekly. Personally, I felt that the coffee, though a bit strong for my taste is better than coffee from Starbucks. At another location, I had their Chai latte, which was also good. They also offer bakery items, which I did not sample.
There are 13 Caffe Ladro locations. All of them are in the metro Seattle area including those in Kirkland, Bellevue, Edmonds, and Bothell.
Rachel Ray visited a Caffe Ladro location, but in south Seattle. There is a link to her review. I have to agree about knowing regulars. The friend I was with went to the store when he worked in downtown Seattle a few years ago, and he received a "What's up" from one of the staff.
