Often, small towns in New Zealand have their own icons and Feilding has a stockman. This flat sculpture of the typical stockman with his horse and dogs stands high above the entrance to the Feilding Saleyards in Manchester Street.
Feilding Saleyard, one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere is uniquely located in the heart of Feilding's Edwardian town centre.
Selling livestock is one of New Zealand's oldest traditions, that dates back to the 1880's. The Livestock Centre is a thriving, growing business and is very much part of the lifeblood of Feilding and the Manawatu District.
You can visit the Saleyard in Manchester Street and wander through the 330 sheep pens to watch the auction process in action. Feilding Saleyards's twice weekly sales see an average of 15,000 sheep and 1,400 head of cattle sold each week, plus there are a variety of specialist season sales.
The Stockman with his horse and dogs is very much a part of farming life in Feilding. This sculpture is made from flat metal sheet.
