Two plaques are placed in the pavement near the sculptures. The plaque by the male sculpture reads:

This statue was presented to the City of Jacksonville,
Florida, by the Jacksonville Track Club on March 2, 2002,
to commemorate the 25th running of the Gate River Run,
a 15 kilometer foot race.

The inaugural River Run started at this location on
April 1, 1978. This runner symbolizes the partnership
between the City of Jacksonville and the Jacksonville
Track Club's Gate River Run, the largest participatory
sporting event in the city.
