Father Luke described the growing frontier town to Mother Superior and lamented the shortage of quality medical care. The Mother Superior was moved by the town’s plight and send several sisters to Bend to work in the small hospital. It wasn’t long before the town outgrew the hospital and in 1921, the original St. Charles Hospital opened here at Franklin Avenue and Lava Road.
