Smithsonian Inventory Description: "Full-length portrait of Brigadier General Lloyd Tilghman, dressed in military uniform, standing beside a rearing horse whose front hooves are on a broken wagon wheel. The General holds the horse's reins in his proper left hand and he holds a sword in his outstretched proper right hand. The General's hat is on the ground behind the horse's proper right rear leg."

The text on the base of the equestrian statue of General Tilghman reads:

Brigadier General Lloyd Tilghman CSA
Commanding First Brigade of Loring's Division
Killed May 16, 1863
Near the close of the Battle of Champion's Hill, Mississippi
