There is information on the Grove family at the Mere Museum including a description 'the black talbot dog being part of the coat of arms of the Chafyn Grove family of Zeals House' in respect of The George Inn. This dog appears on the coat of arms we have here.
The memorial inscription reads:
'M.S
William Frederick Grove,
Clerk, upwards of fifty years
Rector of Melbury Abbas Dorset.
To him the inhabitants of Zeals
are chiefly indebted for the in-
estimable benefits of a church
and school room the erection
of which he first proposed and
afterwards aided by liberal
contributions.
Obiit 5 Aug. 1847.
AETAT 77.'
