This station clearly dates to the French colonial period, most likely built in the 1930s. I was told that it operated as the town bus station until the Khmer Rouge took power, after which bus traffic was so infrequent as to not require its reactivation.
It is now superseded as the town station by the new, informal, station area a kilometre to the south. However, this station still serves as an embarkation point for 'local' buses (pick up trucks with seats) and a rendezvous point for taxies to other provinces—if you want to share a taxi on a journey to somewhere in Cambodia, come here and negotiate with the drivers.
I do not think it is impossible that this station may one day become again the 'official' Battambang bus station. The informal station area looks to be full to capacity, with parked buses crowding the streets. I suspect that as the number of travellers increase, and local citizens start to complain about buses and noise, things will change.
Interesting architecture: French colonial era.
