Although this is a battlefield museum, a large portion of this Civil War center is dedicated to and centered Abraham Lincoln and his accomplishments, especially in a hall made just for him filled with statues and paintings. This statue located outside the welcome center is symbolic of Abraham's influence during the Civil War and especially of the Battle of Gettysburg. His famous speech was given just 4 months after the Gettysburg Battle at the dedication of a memorial cemetery on November 19, 1863. This is why the statue is here.
The bronze figure is out front and to the left of the main entrance of this visitor center. It is in a separate circular area. Abe sits on the left side of a stone bench, his right proper hand resting on his hat which sits with the bottom down on the bench. His left proper hand is holding papers or a small book or pamphlet, with the arm resting in his lap. He is wearing a long overcoat, a dress shirt and bow time and is looking over to this left. The statue is left size and Abe looks rather gaunt and old. There is no record of this statue anywhere to be found.
