These sluice gate is at Nuns Cross Ford. One gate regulates the water flow on the leat and the other the flow on the overflow channel.
Devonport Leat is a considerable engineering achievement. It was built in the 1790's to take fresh water to the ever growing docks of Devonport in Plymouth, but now it terminates at Burrator reservoir. The water is taken from the West Dart River and the Cowsic, north of Two Bridges. Only the Dartmoor section of the leat survives due to building and modernization within the city of Plymouth.
This part of the leat is on High Moorland, it is an interesting area with the old clapper nearby, not far away is the leat tunnel, and also the old farm at Nuns Cross which has now been turned into a Bunk House.
