Daniel Evans was the first building contractor in Oxford. His first building he built in Oxford was Wesleyan Methodist Chapel built in 1817. His first college building was in 1822.

Joshua Symm started as a stone mason for Evans in the 1830s. He married his daughter and after the death of Evans in 1846 he took over the firm.

Symm & Co. continues today and continues to have its impact on the buildings in Oxford.
