From the summit of Mount Hutt, you can almost see to infinity. ...Well that's how it felt to me!

On one side, Mt Hutt overlooks the vast Canterbury Plains and the Pacific Ocean. On the other side there rolls crag after crag of the New Zealand southern alps. About two weeks after this locality was visted, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck the nearby city of Christchurch causing significant damage, but no loss of life. Several newspaper articles claimed it was tthe largest earthquake in eighty years in NZ which probably referred to the Napier eathquake of 1931 with the loss of over 250 lives.

The recent 2010 eartquake caused a new fault line to appear in one of the Canterbury Plain farms.

The views obtained from Mt Hutt show the striking change in topography from the alluvial plains to the alps.

Access to the summit is via the fast six seater "Summit" chairlift which starts from near the Mt Hutt ski field resort buildings. The resort itself is accessed via a road which winds its way from the plains up to the resort.

Being a seasonal ski resort, the writer would not expect lift access available all year around. Fees apply to the lift. The coords of the parking area were not recorded, but the Mt Hutt Ski Resort is well known.
