RAF Dumfries was a grass strip prior to 1939 when it became a base to fit out aircraft fresh from the factory. Over 5000 aeroplanes passed through here before the end of the war. The Control Tower is used by Dumfries Aviation Museum. A great day out.

The grass strip was replaced with a concrete runway pretty soon as it became too boggy. Many of the buildings built for the WW2 sill exist and are in use today. One hangar is used by a wood working company. One hangar burnt down. The Control Tower is the most accessible as it used as main indoor exhibition space by Dumfries Aviation Museum. The Control Tower is a cube and a listed building. On the ground floor are engines, the next floor has WW2 memorabilia and local stories of aircraft recovery. With the top floor recreating the control room as it may have been.
