This arch, supported by two lamp posts, is at the boarding area for cable cars at the Hyde Street turnaround. The arch is named after
Friedel Klussman in honor of her successful efforts to preserve the cable car system in San Francisco.
In 1947, when the City of San Francisco announced that they would be replacing the cable car system with a fleet of busses, Friedel Klussman formed the Citizens' Committee to Save the Cable Cars. She got a referendum on the ballot and the people of San Francisco voted to save the cable cars by over a 3 to 1 margin. Friedel Klussman became known as "The Cable Car Lady".
