This GMD Ground Measuring Device is located on the grounds of Camp Ripley near Little Falls, MN. The Camp operates the Minnesota Military Museum which houses both indoor and outdoor displays. The museum is a must for everyone, especially those interested in military history, Minnesota history or history in general. The inside displays are magnificent and focus on the early days of Fort Ripley, and progress through all of America's wars. Outside are numerous displays of military equipment, tanks, aircraft, weapons and more.

This GMD is just outside the museum doors and the information sign states:

Used by artillery units in conjunction with weather balloons that carried telemetry transmitters. The transmitters on the balloon relay weather data (temperature, humidity, wind, etc) up to an altitude of 100,000 feet and at a distance of up to 150 miles that is received by this unit. The data is used to adjust targeting calculations for artillery fire and for weather prediction.

It was developed in the 1950's and used by artillery units of the Minnesota National Guard until mid 2002.
Location restrictions:
Located on a military installation, though the museum is open to the public, open weekdays during the summer and Thursdays and Fridays during the winter, no fee but suggested donatin of $3.00
