The town pump takes the form of an obelisk with a ball finial. It has an inscription:

'The Town Pump
This obelisk was erected
A.D. 1784
on the site of the cupola
or ancient market-house.'

Standing in the centre of the pedestrian area the shops surround this unusual feature and the signs decorate the pavement around it; new in contrast to old.
