Giant Fish~
Several types of fish regularly eat pieces of plastic they mistake for food. Plastics move into the food chain as fish eat the plastic, and then humans and marine life eat the fish. As plastic particles circulate through oceans, they act as sponges for waterborne contaminates such as PCBs, DDT and other pesticides. These toxins can be up to a million times more concentrated in the bits of plastic than they are in the surrounding water.
This sculpture is a rebar frame covered with pieces of plastic and aluminum cans wired onto a supporting mesh. The red plastic used in this sculpture is most difficult to find washed ashore, as research shows it is the color of plastic most often mistaken as food by marine creatures. |
