Just in front of wonderul and amazing building of Milan cathedral (Duomo di Milano), on opposite side of the square is standing bronze equestrian statue of the first king of united Italy - Viktor Emmanuel II.
The monument was designed by Ercole Rosa and it was dedicated in 1896. It depicts the king leading the army into famous "Battle of Solferino" in 1859 (btw. the battle is especially notable for being witnessed by the Swiss Jean-Henri Dunant. Horrified by the suffering of wounded soldiers left on the battlefield, Dunant set about a process that led to the Geneva Conventions and the establishment of the International Red Cross.)
On the pedestal one can see relief plastic representing the entry of Piedmontese-French army into Milan during Second Italian War of Independence in 1859.
