The corner stone was laid on February 23, 1855; a crowd of people came up from San Francisco by steamer for the event, and the Alta California (newspaper) sent a reporter who wrote that Commander Farragut made some "handsome remarks" but failed to quote them.

As you can see it on California Ave.on the old photo, but this was changed to Nimitz Ave. when the city of Vallejo took control of Mare Island in 1996
