Pitkin is a small Colorado mountain town located along the old Denver South Park & Pacific (DSP&P) Railroad line. Originally named Quartzville, it became Colorado's first mining town west of the Continental Divide in 1879. The town was later renamed after Governor Frederick W. Pitkin.

The Alpine Tunnel Historic District begins near Pitkin and follows 13 miles of the DSP&P RR through historic townsites, over engineering marvels and past restored structures, culminating at the Alpine Tunnel itself: the first railroad tunnel ever constructed through the Continental Divide (at an elevation of 11,600 ft above sea level).
