The north east corner of Cambodia, which borders Laos and Vietnam, contains four provinces. It has only been in the last decade or so that national highway number 7, which winds its way sinuously north-eastwards from Phnom Penh, has been paved and the region opened up a little to travellers and to the wider world. (In fact only these two of the four are easily accessible, without hours of bumpy travel, or wet season washed out roads).

Two of these north eastern provinces, Kratie (to the south) and Stung Treng (each with capital cities of the same name), lie along the Mekong River, and share a long (~100km) border. Both also share an agricultural economy—the production of rice is the occupation of the large majority of the population. The land is filled with rice paddies, wooden houses, villages, and intermixed with patches of jungle. Kratie province attracts a small number of tourists because of its world famous fresh water dolphins, however, Stung Treng is more often than not simply a rest stop on the way through to the Laos border.

The border between these two provinces, along highway 7, is a well sign-posted bridge over a small (unmarked on google maps) river. By the look of things, the boundary of each province begins and ends at the river edge, with the river itself being something of a no-mans-land. There is no restriction on travel across the provincial border, though there was an unstaffed police checkpoint on the Stung Treng side of the border when I crossed (September 2010).
