Once the biggest guns in Germany stood here. In order to store them and their ammunition the Zeughaus was built between 1613 and 1617 by the ducal architect Paul Francke. It is striking that the carcass was kept much smaller than the considerably higher amounts of the attic.
Since 1974, the purpose of the building, however, has changed radically. Since then it has been owned by the Herzog August Library, and is therefore used as a research library.

Einst befanden sich hier die größten Geschütze Deutschlands. Um sie und deren Munition zu lagern wurde zwischen 1613 und 1617, vom herzoglichen Baumeister Paul Francke, das Zeughaus errichtet. Auffällig ist, dass der Unterbau wesentlich kleiner gehalten wurde, als das wesentlich höher liegende Dachgeschoss.
Seit 1974 hat sich der Zweck des Gebäudes allerdings radikal geändert. Seit damals ist es in Besitz der Herzog August Bibliothek und wird folglich auch als Forschungsbibliothek genutzt.
Die Präsenzbibliothek beinhaltet einen großen Teil des Buchbestands, ist Katalogzentrum, Fachinformation, Lesesaal, Ausleihe und Seminarraum, Cafeteria; hier finden auch Ausstellungen statt.
